Balenciaga Giant City

Balenciaga Giant City in Charcoal Grey

Over the weekend Vlad and I made the journey up the state of Florida to Tallahassee, home of Florida State University, where my brother goes to school. It was family weekend, and we went up to visit him and go to a Florida State game. If you know me, Vlad, or my family, you will know that we are rather obsessed with college football. This was my first FSU game and we had a great time, who wouldn’t? Even better is FSU won. I did not own a FSU tee-shirt and had to head to the school store to FSU myself, Vlad, and my mom out. We got shirts and finally fit in with the rest of the school population. What worked out perfectly is that I took my Rebecca Minkoff Wine Nikki and my mom had her Linea Pelle Dylan Croco Shoulder bag in yellow. Perfect bags that showed off garnet and gold and we didn’t even plan it.

When I went to Ohio State I had a hard time finding the perfect red bag to wear to the games. Red bags are not always my cup of tea as far as the color goes, too bright, too dark, not enough oomph. So why not skip over the red and carry a grey bag to an Ohio State game (colors are indeed Scarlett and grey). I figured out the perfect college football game day bag, the Balenciaga Giant City in charcoal grey. This is the precise bag I would buy from Balenciaga, and next week while in NYC, we will most likely raid the Balenciaga NYC store. This Balenciaga bag is designed with soft vintage lambskin and accented with large palladium plated metal hardware. I have been a fan of the oversized hardware from its inception, so here it is, the ideal college football game bag. It is young, hip, funky, stylish, and comes in a plethora of colors that can suit your college team needs. Of course it would work for NFL, MBA, NHL, NBA, etc. And even if your school looses, a la Ohio State vs Penn State this past weekend, at least you will be cheering and feeling lousy over the loss in style. Buy through Balenciaga online for $1595.

What Does Color Say About You?

Yellow - Poppie Couture $450; White - Oscar de la Renta Doheny Clutch, $1295; Red - Givenchy Nightingale $1695; Blue - Jimmy Choo Ramona Tote $1995; Brown - Balenciaga Lune $1995; Green - Chloe Heloise $1525; Purple - Nancy Gonzalez Croc Tote $2950; Black - Christian Louboutin Satin Bowler $1195

When you pick a color of a bag (or anything else for that matter), are you being totally objective and choosing based on aesthetics alone? Or is something else deeper lurking in that decision? I know, deep right? Bag Snob is not as shallow as you think =) We all know certain colors represent different emotions and characteristics so let’s test it out and see what those are. Pick your favorite color: yellow, white, red, blue, brown, green, purple or black. Go to the jump page to see what that color says about you. Don’t cheat! Pick a color first!!

yellow, white, red, blue, brown, green, purple or black

YELLOW

You are cheery, optimistic and love attention. When wearing yellow though, you tend to lose your temper more often and if you have kids, I would stay away from yellow as it makes babies cry more! You can sometimes be overbearing and hyper but you benefit from a high metabolism. But if you concentrate, you can be very focused.

WHITE

You feel the need to show innocence and purity. But what is hiding behind the sterility? Usually it is something a bit gritty =) It is a great summer color and the most neutral of all colors but it attracts dirt, so what does that really say about your innocence after all?

RED

You are emotional and intense. You crave attention and is a bit of a drama queen. It makes people uneasy so is not helpful in negotiations and confrontations but you love it! What you want is a story line based on your life on your favorite soap opera! Red is associated with love, it is something you center your life around. But we all can use an accent of red in our lives!

BLUE

Blue is the most popular color among both sexes. You are peaceful and tranquil and generally avoid confrontations. Your calm demeanor is contagious as people around you tend to chill out. But that also means things could get a bit boring and stale. Too much blue is well, depressing. You are also fiercely loyal, productive and can handle stress extremely well.

BROWN

You are everyone’s rock, the most reliable and solid person among your friends. You tend to be more in touch with nature and your style reflects the earth. You are not super girly and tend to have male characteristic traits. You are sincere and genuine but sometime get in a rut of wistfulness.

GREEN
You are ambitious and always working toward making more money - it is no coincidence that money is green! You are in touch with your femininity as green symbolized fertility, which another symbol of “wealth”. You are generally calm and appreciate minimalism - you hate clutter and complications. You tend to be more conservative (that’s the Republican fiscal responsible side of you!).

PURPLE

You lavish yourself in luxury and love the finer things in life. Purple is the color of royalty. In imperial China, no one other than the Emperor can wear purple. You are a true romantic and ultra feminine but tend to live outside of reality. You tend to have a distorted view of yourself but to others you are nothing if not sophisticated.

BLACK

You seek authority and power. But be careful, too much black can make you a villain, as it is the common color for fictional evil characters. It is also the color of submission so be careful which way that authority and power is going. Black makes us thin so we like to wear it but does that mean we are submitting to the social standard of thin equating to beauty? Wow, this is complicated, which is the point here. Black sucks in all light so naturally it is confusing.

By the way, this is my own interpretation from the research I read from Info Please. There is absolutely no scientific basis for this but how did I do? Am I accurate?

Balenciaga Cherche Midi

I have a special place in my heart for anything Balenciaga, but as much as I loved the City “Le Dix” Motorcycle bag almost 10 years ago (yes, I had the original “it” bag in two colors when Nicole, Lindsay and Mischa were 12 years old, still wearing braces and dreaming of Ricky Martin), they’ve been lovingly stored in the back of my bag closet for years and probably won’t see the light of day any time soon. No matter how commercial or over exposed by annoying young stars though, Nicolas Ghesquiere remains the coolest kid on the designing block. And even if I don’t write about Balenciaga bags much anymore, I keep track of Ghesquiere and buy dresses and jackets from the line each season. I was browsing around the other day and came upon the Cherche Midi, possibly the best of Balenciaga’s spring bag line. Its modern square shape with chunky industrial chains is an urban fashionista’s dream and the multi dimensional effect created by the contrasting colors on the exterior pocket flap and strap is quite eye catching. The chain is adjustable and removeable, which means you can use the bag as a clutch, how fabulous right? I love the fresh green shade that Balenciaga does so well each year but this is the first time I’ve liked the bag it’s on. I think this is a bag even Carine Roitfeld (who has told me she does not care much for bags) would approve of. And at $2300 it is fairly well priced considering all the details on this edgy bag. Balenciaga Clous Bag

Quickly, tell me the first 3 things that come to mind upon seeing this Balenciaga bag. Here are mine: 1. Rocky’s body armor complete with spare bullets. 2. Darth Vader’s combat bag 3. Forget iPods, carrying around Bang & Olufson portable speakers is so much more hip hop.

I am either not cool enough to get this or it’s another one of those “Star Wars inspired me so I made a bag” type of thing from Nicolas Ghesquiere (remember his obsession with Tron and the $65,000 pants that resulted from it?) Who wants to spend thousands of dollars to look like some science fiction reject? And If we do choose to spend that kind of money on a bag shouldn’t it at least look like a bag? Does this appeal to anyone? Just wondering because if it does, you probably shouldn’t continue reading our website as you might be offended by our taste.

With all the attention on Balenciaga’s classics, don’t forget that they are still doing new bags that are fab! This multi-color envelope style bag with the green panel in front is the most stylish bag I’ve seen all season. You know how much we love green so when I saw this I totally flipped! I love the adjustable leather handle that is actually long enough to go around my arm. The black adds depth to the bag not to mention versatility so that your green bag can be worn whenever you are in the mood and not only when your wardrobe is just so. $1295, call Balenciaga New York for details 212 206 0872.

Julie Gilhart - The Style Maker

Filed under: Balenciaga Bags — Fel @ 7:04 pm | Share This

juliegilhart.JPGI had the privilege of meeting one of the most powerful figures in the fashion industry, Julie Gilhart- Fashion Director and Senior VP of Barneys New York, last month in Dallas. I was invited to attend a breakfast with her and although I was inexcusably late she was kind enough to spend an hour with me after breakfast to talk about fashion (and by the way, talking to Julie about fashion is like talking to the Dalai Lama about buddhism!).

Background

Julie grew up in Dallas but always wanted to be a surfer girl (she now surfs regularly). Her first job was at Lily Pulitzer and she went to work for Neiman Marcus after college as the Assistant Buyer to Benita Downing, one of the great legendary buyers of NM who traveled extensively with Stanley Marcus.

The Love of Bags
bottegajulie.jpgAs with all the uber fashionable, Julie has a thing for bags. The classics she loves are Balenciaga (which Barneys was the first to carry in the US) and Givenchy. For Spring she has chosen the Lanvin clutch/tote, the white Balenciaga with gold grommets and the Givenchy Clarabelle. Currently, she has been toting around her fave - the Bottega Veneta beluga tote in black (which Bottega has renamed “Julie”), other than the braided handle, it is non-recognizable as anything but a beautifully made bag. As for the “it bag” phenomenon, she thinks it instantly makes a bag non “it” when it’s being marketed or called “it”. Either you got it or you don’t. When asked if there were any bags to watch for, she had a couple immediately in mind; Valextra, for their beautifully made structured classic lines and Paula Thomas for Thomas Wylde.

Style Secrets
lanvinmetallicflattote.JPGAnything simple and easy. Functional clothes that you don’t have to think too much about is important to her so that she can focus on family, her job and the state of the world. She says that fashion has a way of infiltrating every aspect of our lives so it is important to be in conversation about it and understand it but she marches to her own beat and does not follow any trends. As Julie said, “Vogue put it best, ‘Intelligent clothes allow you to be intelligent about everything else’. For me that is it, clothes need to make you feel beautiful and confident so you can think about everything else.”

Barneys Approach
WHITE%20BALENCIAGA%20001.JPGThe Barneys approach to fashion is very simple. They ask two basic questions: Is the product good? And is the designer behind the product interesting and talented? Barneys does not subscribe to marketing tricks, hype and the red carpet. They are firm believers that it is the product and the designers that create the energy.

What’s Next?
Interestingly, the designer she said to watch for is Isabel Toledo who is designing for Anne Klein (her husband did the paintings in the store and Barneys was the first to carry her collection). For years, Isabel has been an underground favorite. Every designer that comes into Barneys admires her work. “Her collection for Anne Klein is amazing, clothes you can wear everyday, plus glamour for evening, “ Julie said.

Another important designer is Sophia Kokosalaki of Vionnet (dresses photographed with Julie) Julie explained that The Vionnet House was founded in 1912 and closed in 1939. It was by a woman considered as one of the greatest dressmakers of the 20th century- a fashion genius who has inspired almost every designer since that time. She based her aesthetic on glamour, simplicity, sensuous, and innovative designs. In fact she is credited with inventing the bias cut. Azzedine Alaia (Julie is a regular in Alaia’s kitchen, often eating lunch or dinner cooked by Alaia while discussing fashion- what I wouldn’t give to be at one of those meals!) has said that Madame Vionnet’s dresses are the only garments you can take apart and cannot copy the pattern. I tried on several of the Vionnet dresses and they are amazingly flattering. Pale in coloration is Julie’s favorite color tone of the season and she declared strapless an important look for spring.

Julie is the consummate cool chick, just hanging out with her made me feel cool! After our interview, we both proceeded to scour the racks at the new Barneys in Dallas for the latest Spring goodies before her taxi whisked her off to the airport to make her flight back to New York.

Snob or Slob?

BFF’s Mischa and Nicole are inseparable these days. Seen here in matching skinny jeans and flowy tops, Nicole is carrying yet another version of the Balenciaga motorcycle bag she so adores, she is also looking a lot healthier thanks to the 10 pounds she gained recently. Mischa is sporting the ultra popular Bay bag from Chloe. Besides looking like Jack next to the Beanstalk and having dry ends in need of trim and deep conditioning, how do you think these junior high style icons look? Snob or Slob?

Dear Bag Snob, Please Help!

Dear Bag Snob (or Bag Snob readers)-
Normally I would go to friends for advice, but none of my friends are into fashion as much as I am. Anyway I need a new bag, something light that I can literally throw around when I run errands etc… The bags that I like the most are all older bags. Normally I would get a new bag (new for the season), but I just want something that I really like and will use a lot. I do not care if it is not a brand new design.

So I have narrowed it down:
balencigahobo.jpgBalenciaga Hobo (similar to the played out Motorcycle Le Dix but hobo shape) in Olive Green. Love the color and it is very light.

miumiucoffer07.jpgMiu Miu Coffer bag (on your top 10 list), in brown or white leather.

YSL reversible bag. Large size and black/silver color. Please help!!!

Irena

balenciaga0107.jpgHi Irena,

You certainly came to the right place to get advice on your new bag. After taking consideration of your needs, we’ve come to the conclusion that the Balenciaga Le Dix hobo would be best. Our main reason for picking this bag is your desire for a light bag that you can throw around. The Miu Miu coffer, a great bag, is heavy and not something you’d throw around. The YSL reversible tote is also fabulous but again, it is not as light as the Le Dix hobo.

We’ve trashed the over exposed Le Dix in the past but lately it’s becoming retro and vintage-y to us (I’ve recently pulled out my old dark brown le dix from 6 years ago!) Anything that lasts more than 5 years in my closet is a classic destined for the Bag Snob museum and the Balenciaga certainly fits the bill. I also love the olive green color, it will be a neutral in your wardrobe and be easy to use daily.

Let us know what you decide on!

Valentino Bags Miss the Mark

Valentino Garavani, undeniable one of the most glamorous and well respected designers of our time suprisingly falls short with his bag collection. For someone who once chided Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz as looking like “bag ladies” for wearing “jogging trousers” and “appearing homeless”, you would think that everything that has his name on it must meet the star quality standards he implores. I imagine his clientele; they are not the hipsters who buy Balenciaga or Chloe, they are the Birkin and Chanel 2.55 bunch who uses Tod’s totes for their dry cleaning. That is why this studded tote is completely baffling - it misses both those markets. Same with the tasteless leopard print tote. These bags look like they are targeting lottery winners. They are certainly not for the same women who wear his gowns and suits. I am really disappointed because unlike, say Marc Jacobs, I expect perfect taste and style from Valentino. Studded Tote $1950, Cavallino Maculato Leopard Print Tote $2450; Crocheted Satin Frame Bag $2290; Lace and Leather satchel $1890, all available at Neiman Marcus.

There is a good article in the Telegraph about what you should consider keeping in your closet for future resale as vintage. This is especially important for the avant-garde gals because it is the outrageous that stand the test of time in the vintage market. I suppose that makes sense, my black Prada sweaters will not be so exciting in 20 years but how I wish I didn’t get rid of my purple Thierry Mugler jacket with the giant pointed Joker like collars! Apparently that is hot commodities these days! Or my Versace print denim jacket. It makes me laugh just to think about it. I might have to rummage through my parent’s house to see what I can salvage. As for bags, you’ve heard this from us before - buy the classics and spend a few extra bucks on Chanel and Hermes. They will only increase in value over time. Remember the Cristobal Balenciaga inspired Edition bag Nicolas Ghesquiere did for Balenciaga? That for sure is a collectors item. Another for sure vintage worthy bag is this Pierre Hardy. Spend wisely and you will be making money!
