Bottega Leather Clutch

bottegaleatherclutch02071.jpgWould I be totally OCD if I got a bag to match my Bottega wallet? I am obsessed with this limited edition color (I want the make up bag too!), the pink just peeks through the distressed gold enough to cut the shine and it distracts attention from any stains you might get on it. I love this oversized clutch (almost 10 inches wide) with multiple compartments, you won’t find this kind of functionality in most clutches plus the pyramid style allows you to keep bulkier things in it without ruining the shape of the bag. Did I mention how gorgeous this color is in person? It’s also trimmed in pink which, as you may know by now, is my favorite color. The leather is pure Bottega, buttery soft, ultra durable and yes, utterly addictive. $1,100 at Net-a-porter.

Bottega Veneta Lizard Clutch

bottegalizardclutch3970.jpg

I was at a Bottega Veneta boutique the other day looking at the dizzyingly array of amazing Spring bags when I happened upon this blush lizard clutch and quite literally dropped to my knees, thankful that my birthday is this Friday. I looked sweetly up at my husband with the most adoring eyes I could muster and to my horror, followed by gut wrenching depression, he laughed at me and then shook his head no!!! How dare he laugh at and then deny me after I made a little baby girl for him from scratch? I can easily buy this bag myself, I’d like to see him try to make his own babies =) The ultra fem blush color and lady-like style perfectly matched with the chunky linked hardware demonstrates the design rigor we’ve come to expect from Tomas Maier. His genius continues to infatuate us. The lizard has so much texture but unlike python, it is smooth which is especially important for a clutch so that you don’t mess up the skin with the constant handling. I should probably practice what we preach and save for a Birkin instead, $3970 is hard to justify for a clutch when the price is only one bag away from a 32 Togo. Call Cory at Bottega Veneta 214-265-0136 or (877 362 1715) for availability near you.

Luxury bag prices to rocket even higher!!!

bottegacroc78k.jpgBlackDiamondBirkin07.jpg
Bottega woven croc: $78,000 Crocodile birkin with diamonds: $148,000

Is leather the new diamonds? Bag prices have been steadily climbing for several years yet retailers say they have not reached their potential ceiling?!?! Terry Lundgren, CEO of Federated Department Stores, described it as “To infinity and beyond!” It’s not unusual to see prices of luxury bags range from $5,000 - $148,000 these days, steep even for Bag Snob standards but they plan to increase them even more? How stupid do they think we are? It’s not as if some miracle cream has been added that will banish cellulite and wrinkles when you come in contact with the bags (which would actually make it priceless). Industry sources say component costs are higher but come on, it’s leather, a by product for goodness sake! Popularity of exotic skins are also to blame and you all know I adore croc and python but I won’t stand being taken advantage of!

Almost every luxury brand has a bag in the 5 figures nowadays. So who are regularly buying $10,000 bags? Mostly Europeans who take advantage of the weak dollar, namely consumers from England, Germany, Italy and Russia. And there are clients on waitlists for crocodile birkins with diamonds that costs $148,000! There is no reason why a bag should cost that much, I don’t care if it’s made of crocodile with diamonds on the hardware. In a world of strife and conflict, it seems ridiculous to be spending this kind of money on a bag. But what do I know, I’m just a girl blogging about her obsession of bags. Seriously, I love bags more than anyone but I have my limits. I study all the bags available and make informed choices each season to add to my collection. And yes, I buy more than one bag a season, but I have a vast wardrobe of bags that range from funky inexpensive clutches to Hermes birkins and it’s a collection I have slowly built in the last 20 years since I was 16 and it’s filled with classics, not “it” bags that cost more than cars.

Even our beloved Bottega Veneta has a crocodile bag this season priced at $78,000, what, was that crocodile fed caviar and champagne and given regular IPL peels and facials? Women who pay $100,000 for special bags claim it guarantees they have a bag their friends don’t own. I, too covet special bags noone else has, but I am not insane.

Wait ’til Kelly hears about this, she is going to hit the roof. We’ve long discussed launching our own line of luxurious bags at reasonable prices. Perhaps it’s time we did. What do you think? How much are you willing to pay for luxury?

Being a Snob Saves You Money!

Dear Bag Snobs,

I’ve been reading your blog for almost 1year and a half now (isn’t it incredible how time flies?). I’ve been following it loyally and surprisingly my husband loves it too. I spend less on bags now as I’ve gotten much more discriminate, buying less ‘it’ bags every month and just going for what I love.

Now I have a problem. I go for yoga 3 times a week, whilst the rest of me looks cool and sophisticated, my gym bag is an old sweaty Nike gym bag. And I’m so embarrassed. I’m looking for a new bag something practical, sweat-proof since the yoga clothes do get wet and still something l can lug around town… Any suggestions?

Your fan,

Julia

Dear Julia,

We are so happy to hear of your new savings plan and it is so true, once you have the best, nothing else compares so you end up buying less. But I’m going to totally contradict myself in a second. In the case of gym bags, I do not believe in using your best and finest leather bags for sweaty clothes (a girl at my gym uses her white Muse and let’s just say, sweat and white leather does bode well for the bag). But that’s not to say a Nike duffel is acceptable either. I like using versatile bags that I can multi-purpose and for me canvas works well because I can use them for the park, beach or for weekend road trips, as well. Here are some suggestions:
Bottega Veneta Canvas Tote
bottegacanvas.jpg
This is not gym specific but it’s a beautiful bag that works for all the situations I mentioned and it is wide enough to put your yoga mat across (although part of it will still stick out). It only has one large compartment (with an interior side pocket) so you will still need to put your shoes and sweaty clothes in another bag before you throw it all in there. At Saks for $670.

YSL Downtown
ysldowntowncanvas.jpg

This YSL is the same idea as the Bottega but of course it is the Downtown style so it is quite a bit more chic. It has a top zip closure which is better for concealing the not so pleasant sight of socks and sports bra. And there are 2 zippers that zip half way each, so you can have your yoga mat partially stick out and zip just one side. At Saks for $1095.

Tod’s Roxbury
todsnylon.jpg

This is not my favorite style of the bunch (it is still really cute as a gym bag) but it’s the most functional. It doesn’t fit a yoga mat (if you’re lucky enough to belong to a gym that has really nice and clean yoga mats) but the zipper compartments are great for membership cards, cash, hair bands, extra socks, etc. And of course nylon is easy to clean and airs out much faster than canvas. At Saks for $645.

Marc Jacobs Bags Fall 2007

marc80s1.jpgmarc80s4.jpg
Fall ‘07 is not Marc’s (or his 20 assistants’) worst bag creations and it certainly is a huge improvement from atrocities of the past few seasons so let’s get the ugly over with so I can go on to the pretty. I can not ignore the ’80s handicraft-bakelite on bags (or on necklaces) that cost thousands of dollars. It was terribly tacky the first time around and it looks out of place in a season full of sleek and clean lines.

marc80s2.jpgmarc80s3.jpg
Marc has always used top quality crocodile (I have a croc Blake bag that is to die) and these crocs are lovely. I am not crazy about the contrasting buckles though (or the pukey mustard color), it ruins the classic lines of timeless croc and cheapens the look.

marcjacobsclutch07.jpg
I really like the oversized foldover clutch made of woven leather, it’s a little Bottega, a little Chanel, and it works.

marc073.jpgmarc072.jpg
Finally, I love the sumptious ostrich bags in simple shapes and fun colors. Points also given for the lack of tacky logo. All in all, a collection that won’t send the Snobs into a buying frenzy but will do well with Marc loyalists.

Bottega Veneta Montaigne Bag (update)

Filed under: Bottega Veneta — Fel @ 10:33 pm | Share This

bottegamontaignemagnolia.jpgThe Montaigne bag in Magnolia (Left,$1,995) is available for pre-order on the Bottega Veneta website! I saw it in another color at the boutique and it is divine. The size is not too big and it is very light, the handles fit comfortably on the shoulder and the leather, the fabulously lush Bottega leather is soooooooo soft. I can’t wait to get it! (ONLY 33 AVAILABLE IN THE UNITED STATES and one is mine! Call Cory at Bottega to get on the list 214-265-0136)

bottegamontaigne.jpgThose of you willing to drop the dough on the gray crocodile version, it’s by special order through Bottega boutiques worldwide ($16,000). I will not be getting it, the only croc on my list right now is the Hermes crocodile birkin in graphite (a gorgeous steel gray). I am saving my Bag Snob earnings to buy it so it will be really special. Kelly and I have actually decided to ONLY purchase bags with money we earn from Bag Snob, we even got a “Bag Snob AMEX” for that sole purpose! Our husbands are so glad we have found a way to support our bag obsession! :)

Bag Snob’s New Wallet

bottegawallet.jpg
pinkgold.jpgAfter three years of alternating between a black caviar Chanel wallet and a black Hermes H wallet in boxcalf, I decided today it was time to part ways with my beloveds and bought the most incredible Bottega Veneta wallet. It’s the same shape as the third wallet from the right in the photo above but in the limited edition color on the left. A gorgeous pink covered in gold, it is the perfect shade for a wallet as the distressed gold treatment to the wallet will camouflage any stains it may sustain from being tossed around in my many bags. I’ve always used black or red wallets because they get so dirty so I was very excited to find this! Call the Bottega boutique and ask for Cory, he will hook you up with anything you crave. 214-265-0136

This is the sunshine I’ve been dreaming of in the midst of the dreary winter weather. It makes me so happy to look at this bag and think of all the fun things I’ll be doing in the spring and summer, like going to Martha’s Vineyard wearing linen pants and flip flops! Yellow is the greatest color for a bag to brighten up any outfit to be fit for sunny days. This bag is perfect for holding a cardigan, romance novel and gossip magazines for a relaxing day at the park. I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet, it is on sale for only $879 - you better get your hands on this before other cold weather daydreamers snatch it up. At Bottega Veneta.

I Have Things To Carry, Too!

“The male kangaroo doesn’t have a pouch; only the female has it. So the male has pouch envy. Why should she have this huge pouch, and I have nothing? I have things to carry, too. At least give me a pocket.” - from Seinfeld

terrence_howard_croc_clutch_sm.jpgOh the hilarity of Seinfeld, yes we miss it. And so true. We get a lot of emails from men asking about man bags - not computer bags, backpacks or Jack Bauer type messenger bags. They want real bags, the kind that stand up to the fashion rigour of women’s bags, like Terrence Howard at last year’s Oscars with an alligator clutch any girl would envy. I mean, it totally makes sense and completely acceptable for men to carry bags. Again referencing Seinfeld, remember George’s over stuffed wallet? He clearly needed a bag because his back became misaligned from sitting on his 8 inch thick wallet. Men carry lots of things around with them, like an iPod, PSP, Treo, camera and maybe some snacks. Where do they put all that? What if it’s warm out and they don’t need a jacket with 10 pockets? Fret no more. Here are our picks for our male snobs.

John Varvatos Folio Messenger

johnvarvatosfolio.jpg

This bag is very masculine. It is basic and simple so he won’t get grief from his buddies for carrying his girlfriend’s bag. This is an all around functional bag, it is just the right size for the everyday as well as for sightseeing when on vacation. Neiman Marcus for $695.

Ferragamo Bleeker Messenger

ferragamobleeker.jpg

I love this adventurer’s bag! Doesn’t it look like something an archaeologist would carry? A cool archaeologist like Indiana Jones. This is perfect for those with a 10.1 megapixel Canon Digital Rebel. This bag screams manly and is ultra stylish. Neiman Marcus for $1400.

Martin Margiela Travel Bag

martinmargiela.jpg

Every man needs a carry-on that looks like this. Don’t use a raggedy old duffel bag when you travel, please. You’re not going to the gym. The flight attendant will be so much nicer to you if you look respectable and she’ll even help you find a nice big spot overhead for this beautiful bag. At Aloha Rag for $1500 (currently sold out).

Bottega Woven Messenger Moro-Nero

bottegamessenger.jpg

Now we get into the fuzzy area of the “He-She” bags. But of course, this is Bottega Veneta so it is going to appeal to the super polished custom tailored suits, special designer washed jeans on the weekends, funky shoes that would be totally girlie if it weren’t in a size 13, kind of men so on him this bag would not stand out as odd. At Bottega Veneta online for $2650.

Bottega Veneta Pepe
bottegapepe.jpg

If the woven leather Bottega Veneta looks like something your girlfriend or wife will steal from you, this alternative is just as stylish without the risk. The woven detailing is on the gusset so you still get the fab BV look with a little more testosterone. At Bottega Veneta online for $1350.

Prada Travel Tote

pradacervotravel.jpg

I’ll admit this bag is iffy for a guy but if you’re a DJ, imagine how cool you would be showing up with this? Just make sure you are prepared to impress the crowd because if all you have up your sleeve is Fergie, you would be a total poser. I do love this bag though, it would be perfect for lawyers or anyone who needs to transport documents. The leather is so yummy! At Saks for $1910.

The hunt for the perfect wallet

Chanel wallets
It seems everyone is on the hunt for the perfect wallet, we’ve received numerous emails from readers who can’t seem to find one that fits all of their needs. I’ve gone through half a dozen wallets myself in the last few years and my favorite is my Chanel long caviar leather wallet with separate compartments for foreign currency, checks, cash, and credit cards. Wallets are very personal as they contain our entire lives in them and they are used more than any other accessory so we want them to look pretty, be functional, and they need to be sturdy enough to stand the abuse they are put through on a daily basis! With that in mind, here are a few of the best choices online:

todskatewallet.jpg If you are looking for a wallet that will stand the changing styles of time, Tod’s is your answer. Kate long wallet has many useful compartments all zipped up so you won’t have little pieces of receipts and/or money hanging out. Tod’s wallets are just as well made as their bags so you can expect this wallet to last you for years but why would you want it to? It’s so boring to use the same wallet forever. $345 at eLuxury

marcjacobswalletquilted.jpgMarc Jacobs quilted wallet in cream quilted leather is subtle and pretty. Unlike some of his latest atrocities, I wouldn’t be embarassed to carry this, logo and all. $425 at Net-a-Porter

redpaddingtonwallet.jpgChloe’s Red paddington wallet is trendy and fun, I absolutely love the miniature padlock and outer compartment, you can hide valuables that aren’t used often in there. It’s also cute enough to double as a clutch without the hefty Paddington bag price tag. Let’s just hope it doesn’t weigh a ton. $590 at Net-a-Porter

bottegawalletbrown.jpgBottega Veneta French flap wallet (4.5 inches long) or Bottega woven wallet (8 inches long). I love the signature Bottega woven leather on the wallets, as for the size, I prefer the longer wallets because I have so many things that need to be with me at all times! $410 - $530 at Saks.comBottegawallet2.jpg

lvwalletblue.jpgredlvwalletopen.jpg
Louis Vuitton French purse wallet is a good basic in its classic Epi leather, durable and scratch proof, this is a good choice if you throw your wallet around alot. The coin purse is on the backside rather than inside, which comes in handy if you like to lug around lots of coins but there are only 4 credit card slots, which is actually plenty, how many credit cards do you need to carry around anyway? $635 at eLuxury

pradawalletcontinental.jpgIf your style is sleek and chic, Prada’s Continental wallet is perfect for you. How fabulous is the metallic leather? I have a Prada checkbook made of the same leather from college and it still looks new. $385 at Saks.
